The next time somebody tries to tell you whey protein is better than pea protein for building muscle, you can officially tell them to go “a-whey.” Because a new study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that pea protein is every bit as effective as whey for making those mad #gainz.
Pea Protein vs Whey Protein
The study looked at 160 males ages 18-35 who underwent resistance training. One third used pea protein, one third took whey and the final group consumed a placebo. The poor guys in the placebo group saw the least amount of muscle growth. There was no difference in muscle growth or strength between the whey and pea groups. The study pointed out that since there was no practical difference in regards to muscle mass between the two, pea was an optimum alternative for those who suffer from whey allergies. Also, it’s vegan.
